How to find legitimate remote jobs in the US (and avoid the fake ones)

Remote roles are a small share of all postings but attract a large share of applications, and they're where most job scams hide. Here is how to find real ones quickly and read them correctly.
Where legitimate remote jobs are posted
Real employers post remote roles on their own careers pages, the same way they post office jobs. For tech, product, data, design and go-to-market roles, that usually means a Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workday board. JobApplyPilot reads hundreds of those boards daily, so you can browse remote jobs in the US, or by field: remote software engineer, remote data analyst, remote product manager and remote customer success jobs.
What "remote" means in a US posting
- Remote, US: you must live and be authorized to work in the US. Many companies only hire in the states where they have payroll set up, so check for a list of states.
- Remote with a time zone: "US Eastern or Central hours" means they expect overlap, not just a US address.
- Remote-first vs remote-friendly: remote-first companies run on written communication; remote-friendly ones may favour people near an office.
- Hybrid is not remote: "remote (hybrid)" usually means two or three office days a week.
Red flags that give away a scam
- They ask you to pay for anything: training, equipment, a background check or "software".
- They send a check and ask you to buy equipment or forward part of the money.
- The interview happens only over text or a chat app, with no video call and no named interviewer.
- The email comes from a free address or a domain that doesn't match the company.
- The pay is far above the market for little experience, and the offer arrives within hours.
A simple rule: if you can't find the role on the company's own careers page, don't apply. Every listing on JobApplyPilot links straight to the employer's own posting.
Standing out among remote applicants
- Apply early: remote roles fill their first-review batch fastest. Set an alert for your role.
- Show remote habits in your resume: written proposals, async collaboration, distributed teams.
- Mirror the posting's skills; check with the resume scanner.
