New grad software engineer jobs: when to apply and where to look

JobApplyPilot · Updated October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

Entry-level software engineering hiring runs on a calendar that surprises a lot of students: the best-known new-grad programs open many months before graduation. Here's when to apply, where to look, and how to make a short resume count.

The new-grad calendar

  • Late summer to fall (August to November): large tech companies open most new-grad roles for starts the following summer. Many fill on a rolling basis, so early applicants see more open slots.
  • Winter to spring: a second, smaller wave, plus startups that hire closer to the start date.
  • Year-round: startups and mid-size companies hire whenever a team has budget, and they post on their own job boards first.
  • Internships follow a similar calendar a year earlier, and a good internship often turns into a return offer.

Where to look

Making a one-page resume work

  • Lead with what you built: internships, then projects with real users or measurable results.
  • Name the languages and tools the posting asks for, where you've used them.
  • Keep education near the top, with your graduation date (employers filter on it).
  • Check each version against the posting with the free resume scanner.

Getting to interviews

  • Apply in the first days a role is open; set an alert for new-grad roles in your target cities.
  • Ask for referrals from alumni at each company before or right after you apply.
  • Practise coding interviews steadily rather than cramming; most processes include at least one technical screen.
  • If you'll need visa sponsorship, say so early and focus on employers that sponsor (see our visa sponsorship guide).
